Why Stabilizers: The Essential Role
PVC, when exposed to temperatures ranging from 100 to 150 ºC, ultraviolet light, mechanical forces, oxygen, ozone, hydrogen chloride, and certain active metal salts and metal oxides, undergoes accelerated decomposition. This rate of degradation is above its natural decomposition rate.
In the processing of PVC, thermal decomposition will not drastically alter its fundamental properties, but itsignificantly impacts the color of the final product. This color change can be mitigated by incorporating heat stabilizers, which inhibit initial discoloration. Furthermore, if oxygen is present during the PVC thermal decomposition, it can lead to the formation of colloidal carbon, peroxides, carbonyl, and ester compounds.
Organotin stands out as the most efficient heat stabilizer, widely recognized for its superior thermal stability, excellent transparency, and mostly non-toxic nature. However, its high cost (though typically required in small amounts of 0.5 to 2 PHR) and lack of lubricating properties are notable drawbacks.
Most organotin stabilizers are liquid-based , with a few exceptions in solid form. They can be used independently or often combined with metal soaps.
