About PVC Production
The processing of polyvinyl chloride products (PVC products) is mainly divided into extrusion, calendering, molding (including injection molding, blow molding, compression molding, etc.) and coating.
Injection molding is the most used molding process, with pipe fittings being the largest end use. The next largest use of molding is blow molding bottles, accounting for 25% of molded products. Molded products also include office machines, electrical plugs and connectors, automotive parts, toys and shoes.
Other molding processes include plasticized paste lining process (for boots, balls, dolls and toys) and rotomolding process (for hollow containers), and powder molding process using plasticized suspension resin blends.
Calendering can be used to produce rigid or soft films and sheets as well as some floor coverings. Most PVC sheets are not backed, but can be compounded or laminated with fabrics.
Plasticized pastes made from emulsion PVC are often used in calendering, often blended with suspension resins to reduce cost. Copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate are sometimes used for calendering rigid products. Flexible calendered films and sheets are often made from general-purpose homopolymers of polyvinyl chloride.
Rigid calendered PVC sheets are mainly used for packaging, but are also used for stationery, credit cards, etc. Soft calendered films and sheets are used in a variety of applications, mainly for furniture and automotive upholstery such as seats and wallpaper.
The extrusion process is capable of processing both hard products (e.g., tubing and conduit, wall/partition panels, windows, profiles) and soft products (wires and cables, flexible tubing, packaging film). Extrusion is often the continuous production of a particular type of product.
It is the most widely used processing method, but also the most rapid growth in the current processing methods. In North America and Western Europe, extruded rigid and flexible products account for 75% of all PVC products. In particular, rigid pipes and tubes account for 6o% of total extruded products and are the largest use of PVC.
The PVC resins used for extruded rigid products are suspension homopolymers with high bulk density and are blended into powdered dry blends (i.e., blends of resin powders, fillers, lead salt/calcium-zinc stabilizers, color powders, etc.) or pellets.
In order to realize the thermoplastic processing of PVC or similar plastics, small amounts of chemicals are added to PVC so that the plastic can be processed at processing temperatures without chemical changes or delayed chemical changes, in order to achieve the purpose of extending the service life of the plastic.
